A Christening 

I overslept this morning. Usually I am well into my day by the time the first November light creeps over the hill behind the house. Dawn, always serene, seems to happen while I’m in the shower. But this morning I opened my eyes as the barren trees began to glisten on their eastern sides, black bark wet with a night’s rain. I watched the browned meadow grass begin to glow, lit by a shaft of morning sun breaking through clouds the color of gunmetal.

In the heart of it all, 25 yards from my window, four deer picked their way gracefully across the slope. I had seen five just a few evenings before and was reminded...
