It is October in Northern Michigan 30-plus years ago.
Traverse, Northern Michigan's Magazine was in its early years, which meant I was under water financially, pushed to the edge of exhaustion and wondering if there was any hope for this labor of love our small group was dedicating so much of our lives to. The number of people suggesting I quit far outweighed anyone suggesting I plunge forward. Actually no one was suggesting I stick with it.
On this one October afternoon, I was driving to Glen Arbor to meet Kurt Luedtke, another in a long line of smart people I'd contacted seeking the answer to, "Is it hopeless or should I perservere?" Kurt, a past executive editor of the Detroit Free Press, was at this Northern Michigan home making final changes to his screenplay, Out of Africa. ...
